Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has upward adjusted the target number of its mobile Internet-access subscribers 670,000 by the end of 2010 mainly due to better than expected sales performance of smartphones, according to the company.
CHT said it currently has about 500,000 mobile Internet-access subscribers, 60% of whom are users of smartphones with bundled contracts and 40% use the service via notebooks, netbooks PCs or other hand-held devices.
CHT said it plans to procure 600,000 smartphones in 2010, double the volume in 2009. Expecting significant demand for Android-based smartphones, CHT will launch more than 10 new Android devices in the second half of 2010, compared to 5-6 models in the first half, the company indicated.
CHT also plans to upgrade the maximum download speed for its mobile Internet service from 14Mbps currently to 21Mbps at the end of 2010. CHT will upgrade 1,000 of its more than 6,000 3G base stations in areas with high demand for mobile Internet-access service, such as Taipei and the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP).
