New Version of Sony Ericsson’s WebSDK Packager tool available

A new version of Sony Ericsson’s WebSDK Packager tool is now available for download on Developer World. WebSDK Packager is a suite of mobile development tools allows both web and mobile developers to create applications for Sony Ericsson phones running Google Android™ OS (Xperia™ X10, Xperia™ X10 mini, Xperia™ X10 mini pro and Xperia™ X8) or Symbian™ OS (Satio™, Vivaz™, Vivaz™ pro). WebSDK Packager 1.2.1 introduces Mac OS® X support for WebSDK Packager, giving developers the option to use this platform to develop and deploy their mobile and web applications using HTML and JavaScript as an alternative to Java or C++. Existing WebSDK Packager users only need to run the basic installation wizard to upgrade to the new version.

Created in collaboration with the PhoneGap open source community, Sony Ericsson’s WebSDK Packager contains the following components:

Sony Ericsson PhoneGap Simulator – runs the application and simulates phone features for testing.
PhoneGap Cross-Platform Framework – enables rapid development by utilizing PhoneGap APIs on Android and Symbian.
Packager – for Android™ applications, packages the application’s web components to deploy in sales channels; for Symbian applications, uses PhoneGap API with WRT widgets.
Emulator Skin – runs the application on a full emulation of the target phone (Xperia X10 or Satio).

The added Mac OS support in WebSDK Packager further extends Sony Ericsson’s efforts to promote cross-platform web development, and is an important enabler for developers to create new services, games, and tools in the mobile and web market.

Additionally, the naming of the product itself is moving from “WebSDK” to “WebSDK Packager” to more accurately reflect the product’s capabilities as an all-in-one tool for developers to build, simulate and package an application’s web components.
