Motorola Continues to Demonstrate TD-LTE Leadership by Passing MIIT's Full Feature Set TD-LTE Lab Trial

LTE second-generation commercial hardware platform demonstrates the most TD-LTE functionalities as required by China Mobile and MIIT.

BEIJING, China – The Motorola Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that it has passed China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) 2.3 GHz full feature set lab trial with a 100 percent pass rate. This marks an important development under the MIIT initiative to accelerate TD-LTE commercialization. This trial, completed at MIIT’s TD-LTE lab, measured key TD-LTE functionalities; radio frequency (RF) performance; operation, administration and management (OAM) capabilities; interface conformity; hardware readiness and backhaul capability.

This milestone follows the recently announced TD-LTE field trial success initiated by the TD-LTE working group, set up by MIIT in June 2009 with China’s three telecom operators and other key industry partners to develop a healthy TD-LTE ecosystem. As part of these efforts, Motorola was invited to conduct the TD-LTE lab trial in advance of the large-scale system trial. With its unmatched expertise in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) mobile broadband technologies and class-leading TD-LTE solution performance, Motorola passed all requirements of the trial with the highest pass rate, demonstrating the most TD-LTE functionalities as required by the TD-LTE working group. Motorola also successfully demonstrated the transmit mode 7 (TM7) capabilities – an implementation of the beam-forming technique that enables operators using TDD spectrum to maximize coverage, capability and quality of service (QoS).

The TD-LTE lab trial utilized Motorola’s latest commercial LTE hardware platform, including the industry’s first TD-LTE capable 4Tx/8Rx radio head and Motorola’s fourth-generation, LTE-Advanced-capable WBR 700 LTE baseband. Motorola’s TD-LTE 4Tx/8Rx radio head supports advanced multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) schemes, including multi-user (MU) MIMO and beam-forming to provide unprecedented capability and coverage for TD-LTE operators, while the WBR 700 offers up to four times the capability of the average LTE baseband currently on the market in a 1U rack with the most compact size in the industry.

Motorola has taken the lead in TD-LTE development, attaining significant achievements. In November 2009, Motorola was selected by China Mobile as the primary solution partner for the world’s first pre-commercial TD-LTE network at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, providing indoor TD-LTE network coverage for major pavilions including the China Pavilion, Expo Center and US Pavilion. Earlier this year, Motorola teamed with China Mobile and Innofidei to demonstrate the world’s first end-to-end TD-LTE experience via a TD-LTE USB dongle. Motorola accomplished the industry’s first TD-LTE multi-vendor terminal interoperability demonstration. These experiences are now being demonstrated during the expo – which runs from May 1 - October 31 – to an anticipated 70 million visitors from around the world.

Adding to its list of industry firsts:
─ First over-the-air (OTA) TD-LTE data session on the TD-LTE network in Shanghai
─ First company to successfully complete and pass the TD-LTE key functionalities test initiated by China’s MIIT
─ The only vendor able to complete all RF test cases in China Mobile’s TD-LTE trial, including reaching the TD-LTE theoretical maximum data rate in 20 MHz and successfully scheduling multiple user devices on the same sector
─ First live drive tour demonstration of TD-LTE at ITU World Telecom in Geneva in October 2009, demonstrating 82 Mbps in a real-world environment (maximum theoretical data rate in that TD-LTE configured 1DL/UL ratio profile)
