Telefónica O2 Germany is one of the first operators to start LTE networks in Germany. Nokia Siemens Networks will supply O2’s pilot LTE network in Halle (East Germany) and will start network deployment in September 2010 in the 2.6 GHz and 800 MHz spectrum. The network will go into operation by the end of this year; it is not planned to operate the pilot LTE network commercially in the first phase.

Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy the complete LTE overlay network comprising of Flexi Multiradio Base Stations and the Enhanced Packet Core (EPC) nodes Flexi NG and Flexi NS. The network will provide broadband capacity and coverage in Halle and its suburb Teutschenthal, an area where there is currently limited broadband access. Additionally Nokia Siemens Networks will manage and operate the network.

“We have always held that there is a strong link between broadband deployment, productivity and economic growth,” added Thomas Riedel, head of Nokia Siemens Networks’ Telefónica business in Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia. “We are at the forefront of LTE development and have recently concluded a trial on the Digital Dividend spectrum. We have already started commercial production of related network products.”

Telefónica O2 Germany has won both Digital Dividend and 2.6 GHz spectrum licenses to launch nationwide LTE services.
LTE allows high speed mobile broadband internet connection and supports faster web browsing, online gaming, social media collaboration and video conferencing. Nokia Siemens Networks leads in commercialization of next-generation mobile broadband (LTE) and has signed 16 commercial LTE deals (including 14 radio deals) to date and conducted more than 25 trials.
