Huawei, Frequentis and Funkwerk Successfully Complete GSM-R E2E Test

Interoperable systems enable secure and stable communications in Australian railway network.

Frequentis and Funkwerk, two leading next-generation communications terminal providers, and Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, have successfully completed a GSM-R end-to-end (E2E) Interoperability Test. GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) is an international wireless communications standard for railway communications and applications. This test has demonstrated that the three parties' systems are perfectly compatible and conform to EIRENE (European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network) specifications.

The test examined the interaction of Huawei' s GSM-R system, including SMSC (Short Message Service Center), HLR (Home Location Register), Softswitch MSC (Mobile Switching Center), BSC (Base Station Controller) and BTS (Base Transceiver Station) equipment with all features and interfaces of Frequentis' dispatching system and Funkwerk' s cab radio system.

In January 2010, Huawei was appointed as the sole supplier of technology and equipment for the delivery of its GSM-R solution for radio communications upgrades in the metropolitan rail network in New South Wales, Australia. Frequentis' and Funkwerk' s solutions will be used in this network. The successful test proves that Huawei, Frequentis and Funkwerk are capable of delivering a railway communication system with a high level of safety and stability, ensuring efficient project delivery in the long term.

"The success of this Interoperability test demonstrates that Huawei' s E2E GSM-R system is able to provide fully customized features such as 1800MHz frequency radio system, Intelligent Network (IN) interface and Short Message Service in Australia' s network", said Mr. Xu Zhiyu, Vice President of GSM-R Product line, Huawei. "As a leading provider of GSM-R solutions, Huawei is dedicated to cooperating with leading companies in the industry and introducing world-class GSM-R solutions to railway operators around the world."

To date, Huawei has more than 5,000km of contracted GSM-R lines and railway customers across three continents. The company completed the world's first GSM-R tests at high-speeds of 430 km/h on the Shanghai Maglev Railway in 2006. Huawei has subsequently become one of a few end-to-end GSM-R solution suppliers in the world, with its GSM-R solution being fully compliant with the latest EIRENE specifications.
