Taiwan-based motherboard maker Gigabyte Technology has decided to adjust the operational strategies for its handset business - wholly owned subsidiary Gigabyte Communications. The focus of smartphone production has shifted from own-brand sales to ODM, with Android adopted as an additional operating system, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Gigabyte reportedly incurred a loss of NT$300-400 million (US$9.3-12.5 million) from its handset business in 2009. In the past, Gigabyte has concentrated on its GSmart handset brand and devices based on Windows Mobile operating system.
