China Mobile prepares to launch converged multimedia apps

Selects Nokia Siemens Networks’ IMS platform and Multimedia Telephony App Server.

China Mobile’s corporate customers in Beijing, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Fujian will soon enjoy a wide range of IMS-based applications like Multimedia Telephony (MMTel) on top of traditional voice services across their fixed, mobile and Internet connections. China Mobile has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to implement its IMS* Core platform, hiQ MMTel application server and Session Border Controller (SBC)** to introduce this converged communications experience aimed at improving end-user satisfaction.

“Today’s users demand seamless access to multimedia applications without being constrained by the devices or network they are using,” said Ding Weiqing, head of the China Mobile customer business team at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our IMS platform will enable China Mobile to quickly launch services that are independent of access infrastructure, devices and network. In turn this will help the operator to capture new business and increase customer loyalty. It will also help the network operator to become a stronger player in the fast evolving fixed-mobile convergence market.”

As a first step, Nokia Siemens Networks will deploy its IMS core platform and multimedia telephony application for China Mobile’s enterprise customers in Beijing, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Xinjiang, Hunan and Fujian. Nokia Siemens Networks will, in the future, expand the IMS core network deployment and offer additional multimedia applications on top of voice applications such as video sharing and multimedia conferencing, for both corporate and individual customers of China Mobile.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ IMS is an open and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standardized platform, enabling fast and cost efficient deployment of converged multimedia applications for telecom operators. It is compatible with multimedia applications offered by the vendor and other parties, thus widening the range of services that the operator can launch to attract new subscribers and tap into new revenues.
