Android 2.1 update for Dell Streak leaked

See that? It's Android 2.1 (Eclair) running on my Dell Streak (UK O2 version)!

It's a newer build (6941) than the one we saw in Engadget's demo last week and is said to be the latest one available. It is probably not the final version that is expected to be released next month, but it's certainly better than what's on the Streak right now.

All you need to do is download the .apk available through various links in this MoDaCo thread, rename it Update.pkg, transfer it to the root directory on the Streak's microSD card, hold the volume up and down buttons while turning the device on to boot into recovery mode, and select option 2. Then just sit back for a few minutes while the Streak does its thing. Before you know it, it boots back up with that sweet Eclair slathered all over it.

I heard that this doesn't work on the unlocked UK Streak, so I don't know how it will fare on the AT&T unit. Mine is being delivered today, though, so I'll find out soon. [Update: Doesn't work]

Thanks, ANON!

The date is incorrect in some of the pics because I didn't set it manually or turn on WiFi for it to be set automatically.

In addition to the improved benchmark scores and snappier performance, what I like best about having 2.1 on the Streak is that double-tap zooming is supported in the browser and the URL bar scrolls up with the rest of the page. Live wallpapers, compatibility with a lot of apps that don't support 1.6, voice search, and other goodies inherent in Eclair don't hurt either!
