Where is the Mobile Experience going?

Apple iPhone, in my opinion, is one of the biggest influence in mobile movement for the smartphone market because it has become the "it" device for personal task management. For a commuter, an iPhone does quite a bit from media player, email communication, web surfing to unlimited potential via a friendly mobile app store (for mCommerce, utilities, etc...).

With Palm Pre coming next week, I can't help but wonder just how will this new device transform our mobile experience. If its anything like the Android, which is great but nothing exceeding what the iPhone has done, then it would just be another "flavor" of the existing mobile experience.

I am hoping for more, by more, I mean to be further detached ourselves from a personal computer and rely on smartphones solely. I want the mobile browser to be truly capable of handling secure pages, complex forms and tables, flash video and more. I want multi-tasking and more CPU power. I yearn for the day where I can truly rely on my smartphone for everything I need from a laptop.

I am anxiously awaiting for 6/6/09 to find out what the Palm Pre can deliver!

Diagram of the life of an iPhone App Store reviewer

Now this we can appreciate! Looking at this, if you’re familiar with the seemingly random app rejections that were (and sometimes are still) happening, you’ll get a really good laugh out of it.This writer especially appreciates the “sounds of flatulence” reference, and the “we feel threatened by it” bubble as well. We remain convinced that’s why the NiN app was rejected the first time.Based on

Personal Gripe on iPhone's Usability

Okay, the iPhone camp has been taking plenty of complaints on the lack of "copy & paste" function from the get go; for a day to day user, there are a few more annoying missing features which enhance iPhone usability, I sincerly hope to see these hiccups resolved in future updates:

* Text/SMS character counter - a simple backwards counter can help SMS usage
* Share a "Contact" via Email or Text, this is helpful when you tell someone, "I'll text you his or her number", currently there is no easy way of doing so, other than memorizing the number
* Share Google Map set pin location via Text/SMS, this is great amongst iPhone users (currently only sharing via Email is permitted)
* Make a software based "Home" button (this reduces the wear and tear on the only home button)
* Ability to save docs & PDFs
* Ability to save images w/o suppressing it to lower resolutions (much needed when downloading detailed images, like maps)
* Ability to adjust LCD brightness while watching a video in iPod (very irritating to go to settings to access brightness control in middle of a movie)
* Send Notes via Text SMS (currently only email allowed), it should warn you about character length and suggest email if exceeds 160 character count

Calling all developers for Android Developer Challenge 2!

I'm excited to announce the second Android Developer Challenge (ADC)! The first challenge was a huge success with over 1,700 entries that resulted in 50 excellent winners. With the recent release of Android 1.5, as well as the availability of devices in multiple markets around the world, I'm pleased to announce the second ADC.

We've expanded ADC 2 to involve a very important part of the Android community—the users who will be running these applications. Users of Android-powered devices with Android Market will be able to download a special Android judging application and use it to download and rank applications submitted to the Challenge. The results from this round will determine the top ranking applications in each of the 10 categories. These top applications will then be ranked by a combination of users and a panel of Google selected judges through a similar process as the first round to determine the final winners.

I've already seen a lot of great apps on Android and I look forward to seeing even more innovative and unexpected cool apps that will come out of this Challenge! For more details on ADC 2, please see the official site. Start your engines and good luck!

Zune HD looks amazing, not 100% there

Microsoft announced an update to its otherwise mediocre music player today. The new Zune HD (the "HD" here stands more for HD radio, not HD video on device @ 480x272 although it supports HD output for external devices at 720p) looks very slick with a pretty cool looking UI powered by OLED dsiplay, but I am not sure if it has what it takes to de-throne the mighty iPod/iPhone franchise.

In today's market, we are looking for more features, from a music device standpoint, the Zune HD looks to be a very good alternative but why not turn it into a Smartphone. Its not as if Microsoft doesn't have access to Mobile OS, I just don't understand why they didn't attempt the obvious.

Android Icon Guidelines

For our second post in our series on Android UI, we're releasing our Icon Design Guidelines and an Android Icon Templates Pack. These should make it a lot easier for you (or your designer) to develop all the icons your applications need, so they fit with the other icons in the Android environment.

The Icon Design Guidelines document describes how to design and export icons that fit within the Android framework. It includes a wealth of detail about icons in the Home screen, menus, the status bar, tabs, dialogs, and lists.

The Android Icon Templates Pack is a collection of template designs, filters, and settings that make it easier for you to create icons that conform to the general specifications given in this Guidelines document. We recommend downloading the template pack archive before you get started with your icon design.

The Templates Pack provides templates in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator file formats, which preserves the layers and design treatments we used when creating the standard icons for the Android platform. You can load the template files into any compatible image-editing program, although your ability to work directly with the layers and treatments may vary based on the program you are using.

Lightning talks at Google I/O

Google I/O is approaching, and with over ten quality talks lined up, we should all strive to be attentive, avid learners. But for the last Android session of the conference, we thought it would be fun to unwind and open up the podium for lightning talks. This is where anyone can take the stage for six minutes and talk about anything. If you've done a cool hack involving Android, if you've devised a clever technique for a common problem, or even if you just want to get up on your soapbox for six minutes to appeal to your fellow developers, this is your time to be heard.

For those planning on attending Google I/O, we need you to submit and judge lightning talk proposals through a Google Moderator series we've set up. Please go ahead and start submitting your proposals. You only have 250 characters to describe the talk, which may be 110 more characters than you've been used to these days.

Voting is open from now until the moment the session starts. We'll take the eight highest rated talks and will call upon each speaker to take the stage. Remember you only have six minutes. Exceed that, and our security force tackles you off the stage. Thanks and see you all at I/O!

Virtual worlds in education and Moodle

Today I'd like to share with you my recent paper about using virtual worlds in education, with a special focus on how we can use virtual worlds with Moodle. I wanted this paper to be a basic introduction to why virtual worlds are good for education, and also provide a basic overview of some of the most interesting virtual worlds/tools on the market today.
Here is the embedded version from Scribd:
I presented this paper at the 3rd International Slovenian MoodleMoot with a live demonstration of Webline.lite (a super easy way to add avatars to any website), and I hope I managed to encourage some teachers to think about virtual worlds as a possible addition to their online courses. This year I was positively surprised to hear so many teachers using blogs and wikis in their classrooms, so perhaps next year I won't be the only weirdo talking about virtual worlds anymore :)

A little cloud computing, very good Mobile Experience

I've decided to get back to the gym this season. This time around I've been taking my routines a bit more seriously than before by tracking my progress and switching them up in between days. Thanks to Google Docs and it's mobile browser support, it has been helping me keep track of my routines over my smartphones in the gym. Whether I am using my iPhone or G1, I can access Google Docs via mobile browsers and pull up a spreadsheet I am using to remind me what exercises to perform.

Not that this is anything groundbreaking, but it beats carrying a notebook and a pen around the gym; plus I am already using my phone as an iPod at the gym anyways. PS - another Mobile Experience related to working out: Just before heading out to the gym tonight, my G1's WeatherBug App sent me a Poor Air Quality alert; knowing that, I decided to stay indoors and ran on the thread mill instead of outdoors. Nice!

Why a new iPhone (III) is Immenient?

I just realized I have not been sent any PR on new iPhone accessories for quite some time. Top accessories manufacturers must be quietly ramping up new design and production line for the upcoming iPhone to be announced over the upcoming WWDC.

Official G1 Cupcake 1.5 First Impressions

As mentioned earlier, I got the latest system update for my G1. Now running firmware 1.5, aka Cupcake. Here are some of my first impressions:

* More polished: transition in between menus and graphics are a bit softer, dynamic and feels more elegant
* Better UI: onscreen keyboard w/ auto-correct feature; Gmail's most used feature are readily below each email, everything just feels a bit more convenient with the update
* Onscreen Keyboard not as robust as iPhone's but the word suggestion is VERY handy!
* Chrome/Browser much improved, very smooth and URL bar/search makes good suggestions like desktop Google toolbar; still unable to edit blogspot posts however and can't handle Lotus notes webmail (same fate as iPhone's mobile safari)
* Camcorder: simple operation, with an on screen record/stop button; two video quality (MMS is low, SD storage is High); YES, it supports upload to YouTube (via YouTube app)
* General performance feels a bit faster all around
* I have not played with this update long enough to comment on battery life

It definitely feels like this update has iron'd out a lot of kink; I think I am falling in love with my G1 all over again.

I gots the G1 Android w/ Cupcake 1.5 Update

Booted up my G1 tonight and was prompted with a message asking me if I want to get a system update. "Heck yeah," I said, while suspecting this may be the highly anticipated Cupcake 1.5 release. Sure enough, after it rebooted, I noticed some visual differences and the firmware version confirmed it being the latest and greatest. I haven't played with it a heck of a whole lot. On screen keyboard and autocorrection is nice but I may have to re-calibrate my touchscreen since the delete button is not working very well. More updates later!

UK Criminal Evidence Delays.Due to delays in passing evidence to the defence certain building blocks of evidence used against a defendant are not being held by the prosecution, but worst still, the expert who obtains, for instance the tests and results, holds on to them because they claim their client (the Police) haven't made that a term of the instructions to pass them over. What do you want in the next iPhone?

With Palm Pre to be released just two days prior to the WWDC conference, many have suggested some rumored features of the new iPhone, 3rd generation. Apple's historical record has never failed us, I have to imagine Apple is planning something big in anticipation of the Palm Pre. I would personally like to shoot for the stars and hope for the following features:

* Front Camera w/ Video Conference support; carrier, Skype or Gtalk Video
* Improved CPU, RAM and GPU to handle even more powerful applications

Palm Pre, $200 AR, Yours on June 6th, 2009

For those of your thirsty for the new Palm Web OS, you will only have to salavate for 18 more days as Palm Pre will be released on Saturaday June 6th, 2009. Bring $300 to your local Best Buy, Walmart, RadioShack or obviously, Sprint Store and expect a $100 rebate when you signup with their qualified data plans.

Some notes to self:
* $200 AR price is very competitive to the best of breed (8GB iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm, etc.)
* Launching 2 days prior to Apple's WWDC conference, where a potential new iPhone may be out
* Palm and Sprint must have worked like crazy to make the June deadline but I think it would have been more effective if they could have launched this in April/May
* Personally, I'd hold out two more days to see what Apple has up in their sleeves, last thing I need is because I couldn't hold out 48 hours and committed to an inferior smartphone

Affiliates and Coupon Sites Invade Mobile Experience

Recently, I shared a story where I placed an order via mobile using Amazon.com app and what a great mobile experience that was. With mobile users in mind, the folks at FreeShipping.org, a popular affiliate marketing publisher has decided launch an iPhone app to provide free shipping and discount coupons to all popular online retailers. As an online marketer by trade, it was nice to see my 8-5 job's affiliate marketing codes on the "FreeShipping" app. Whether an online retailer is ready or not, the mobile commerce is happening and cool apps like "FreeShipping" will take the eCommerce eco-system to mobile.

The "FreeShipping" iPhone app is the second app this company has produced. Their first app launched is called "Coupon Sherpa" (couponsherpa.com) which is catered towards accessing printed coupons for brick and mortar stores. Already an iTunes staff favorite, "Coupon Sherpa" is also providing great mobile experience for users. I can't think of how many times when I walk into a brick and mortar store wanting to buy something only wishing I had printed out the 30% off friends and family coupons that I saw on my favorite affiliate marketing websites. With this app, you can easily retrieve the coupon on your iPhone and show it to the store clerk.

Both apps are great compliments to each other and as for me, it becomes another great mobile experience addition!

Montblanc Pen for $10 or less (Hack!)

Material:
Pilot G2 Pen - $1ea. (find here)
Montblanc Rollerball Refill - $6 ea.
(find here and here)
Hacksaw (like this one)

Instructions: I won't take any credit in this hack since I got the full instruction originally on Instructables. The original instruction used a G2 Pro, but one commenter suggested using even the cheaper G2 (w/ a full clear tubing) for a better looking outcome. I decided to test out using the clear G2 for myself since I had some refills around.

Result: It's a pretty cool hack. I do have a nice Montblanc pen but I hardly ever use it because I am always losing my pens. With this hack, I have the benefit of using Montblanc's high quality refill in a pretty cool looking display pen case. The hack itself and how easy to implement makes it a cool project!

Review: Agent18 Slim ClearShield

Fascinated by GeekMorgan, the dude who made his own custom iPhone 3G GameBoy case, I decided to review the Agent18 Slim ClearShield iPhone 3G case myself (Amazon $23 shipped). For those of you unfamiliar with Agent18, they are a small firm based out of SoCal making pretty cool accessories for iPhones, iPods and even Zune products.

The Slim ClearShield has a pretty basic two-piece sandwich design holding the iPhone 3G in the middle. Ever since an incident I've had with my Griffin ClearBoost coming apart after I dropped my old iPhone to the ground, I have been preferring the slider-style cases (ie. Griffin Clarifi, Incase Slider, etc...). Agent18 Slim ClearShield, however, has a pretty sturdy clip design holding the two halves together nicely; as a safety, I did affix very small strips of clear tape to support the corners for added holding strength. Overall, the case is very easy to use, it comes with a screen protector, iPhone 3G dock adaptor (so you can use OEM dock to charge w/ the case on, very smart!) and two other Agent18 swapable badges (light gray and green colored). The cutouts are large for easy access even if you have fat fingers. With the case installed, your iPhone will remain its classy appearance without adding too much bulk to its overall dimension.

I did some research and have concluded that this is probably the best case to make your own iPhone 3G Gameboy case. For some reason, its quite hard to find all clear cases for the iPhone 3G. I am arranging a review unit of the Griffin iClear for iPhone 3G to see if I can produce a custom case of my own coming up, stay tuned.

Overall, if you want a no-frill, high quality clear case for your iPhone 3G, Agnet18 makes a very solid choice. MSRP $35
